music boxes

This is a series of three electronic music boxes which combine elements of traditional mechanical music boxes with sound-producing electronic circuitry, operated by methods associated with old-fashioned music boxes.

Boxes 1 and 3 are played by turning a handle mounted on the box which, instead of rotating a drum, is connected to a dynamo that powers the circuits inside. Turning the handle at different speeds affects the amount of current sent to the circuitry and the sounds produced by the box.

Box 2 has a light sensor inside which allows power to flow to the circuit when the lid is opened. Varying the amount of light produces different sounds, and the music stops when the lid is closed again.

Unlike traditional music boxes, instead of playing the same tune over and over again they produce an unpredictable stream of sounds, and while each box has its own 'character' they never repeat the same sequence.

The aim was to produce objects which were familiar in some senses and unfamiliar in others, with a mixture of technologies and histories.
