the black wolf they call ‘nothing’

the black wolf they call ‘nothing’
This piece continues to explore some of the ideas from ‘imaginary animals’, and is intended to be the first in a series of paintings which use the same technique.
The front of a canvas is painted with thermochromic paint - a pigment which is black at room temperature but fades to white when heated. Behind the canvas, the outline of an image is ‘drawn’ using resistance wire which is heated and cooled using homemade circuitry.
This creates a ‘painting’ which gradually appears and then fades away to nothing every few minutes.
The piece is based on a motif which features in several works by Francis Picabia - a primitive depiction of a wild animal with seven eyes - while the title is taken from a line in the song 'Dead of Night' by american band Mount Eerie.
